Day 8 – A song to match your mood

Golden Brown – The Stranglers

I first heard this song when I saw the movie Snatch (such an awesome movie), and I instantly fell in love with it.  It is an amazing song that always puts me in a great mood and makes me smile.  It makes me think of warm sunny days.

The reason I chose Golden Brown is because after a cold and rainy streak, it’s finally back up to the 70s in Atlanta, and this song captures that happy, springy feeling in my opinion.

I hope you like it as much as I do!  🙂

Yesterday on my way to work, I was listening to the radio and the morning show DJs began talking about the creepiest Christmas song ever.  I was driving through Atlanta, racking my brain to figure out what it was while they were on commercial.  Sadly I couldn’t think of anything.  When the show came back on, they announced that Baby It’s Cold Outside was the creepiest Christmas song of all time.

I ran through the few lyrics I knew in my head and still wasn’t quite sure what the DJs were talking about.  Then they started reading the lyrics and my jaw dropped.  If you take the lyrics out of the cute Christmassy/wintery context, they are pretty sketchy.  The girl keeps saying no and she has to go, and the guy is trying to force her to stay.  He’s forcing another drink on her and won’t listen when she says no.  It’s fairly date rapish when you think about it – and we consider it a cute holiday song.

Here are some of the lyrics that are scandalous:

The neighbors might think – Baby, it’s bad out there
Say, what’s in this drink – No cabs to be had out there…

I simply must go – Baby, it’s cold outside
The answer is no – Ooh darling, it’s cold outside
This welcome has been – I’m lucky that you dropped in
So nice and warm – Look out the window at that storm
My sister will be suspicious – Man, your lips look delicious
My brother will be there at the door – Waves upon a tropical shore
My maiden aunt’s mind is vicious – Gosh your lips are delicious
Well maybe just a half a drink more – Never such a blizzard before

So after getting a new view of this classic song, I started thinking about some other songs that have a bit of a scandalous undertone.  For example…

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus – This song is basically saying that mom is unfaithful and her small child saw her hooking up with Santa.  She’s tickling under his beard.  She didn’t see her child creep…

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
Underneath the mistletoe last night.
She didn’t see me creep
Down the stairs to have a peep;
She thought that I was tucked up
in my bedroom fast asleep.

Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus
Underneath his beard so snowy white;
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If Daddy had only seen
Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town – I know this song is supposed to teach kids to behave and listen to their parents, but damn are the lyrics creepy.  It’s like a horror movie (or a peeping Tom) when you think about it.  “He sees you when you’re sleeping.  He knows when you’re awake.  He knows if you’ve been bad or good.  You better watch out!”  It makes you imagine an old guy hiding behind your curtains watching your every move…

Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer – This song is hilarious, but definitely not very family-friendly.  Grandma was too boozed up on the ‘nog to have common sense to not walk home.  Then she stumbles out the door and gets killed by Santa and his sleigh.  Then grandpa is trying to move on by drinking beer and watching football.  The family’s not feeling too festive and they’re all dressed in black.  When you think about this song, it’s really freaking morbid.  And the family may be slightly alcoholic…

I’m sure there are more scandalous or sketchy holiday songs out there, I just can’t think of any more at the moment.

What are some Christmas/holiday songs that you don’t think are quite as cute as they’re intended to be?

Ho ho ho and Happy Hanukkah!

I am so excited about the Germany trip.  This time next week, we will be a few hours short of take off.  Yippee!

I keep using the trip as an excuse to buy new things.  I bought a new waterproof jacket and a bunch of cute fallish tops from Old Navy last week.  Then I decided that I needed to get some books so I could read on the plane or the trains.  So I ordered Shanghai Girls (hmm, it appears that I ordered the large print edition) and Second Glance:  A Novel.  I can’t wait to crack into them.  Heck, maybe I’ll start one before we leave.

Last night I met up with Little S and her boyfriend, JT, to do some pre-trip shopping.  I decided that I wanted to get one more pair of jeans.  I have some skinny jeans that I’m going to bring and another pair are slightly wider in the leg, but they may not look as good with tennis shoes or heels.  Since I keep hearing everyone on the Net rave about the new Gap jeans, I decided to give them a try.  People, they are awesome.  I’m 5’10 with a 34-inch inseam.  Do you know how hard it is for me to find long jeans?  I decided to get the Curvy in a medium wash, and they’ll still be long – even in heels!  I also bought the cutest pair of black flats to bring with me too!  I know I shouldn’t be shopping before our trip, but it’s hard not to!

So, originally I was not planning on jumping on a new vampire bandwagon, but I think I lied to myself.  I am totally going to start watching The Vampire Diaries when it premiers tonight – my TiVo’s season pass is already set!  I’m intrigued and definitely want to check it out.  I hope it’s good – especially with True Blood ending this Sunday.  A girl’s gotta get her vampire show fix somewhere.  🙂  Anyone else going to be watching it too?

Speaking of The Vampire Diaries, I am obsessed with the song that’s played in some of the previews.  It’s by Metric and it’s called “Help, I’m Alive.”  I heard it a few weeks ago on the radio and thought it was really catchy.  Now that it’s in the show previews, I’m hearing it a lot more which makes me happy.  Scroll down to the song to see the video.

Now you can love it as much as I do!

I have never really like Pearl Jam, but I have to say I really dig their new song “The Fixer.”  It’s so catchy and sticks in your head all day.  If you don’t know it, go to the PJ site and click play on the tape deck!

My laptop bit the dust the other week when T’s family was in town visiting, so we’ve been computer-less at home for about a month.  The other night I decided to test my computer savviness, and holy hell – I fixed that MoFo.  I ended up having to completely reload windows, which means I probably lost some stuff.  Luckily I had an external hard drive that I did back stuff up on, on occasion, so I hope most of it is saved.  It took me some time (because I didn’t have the disks with all the drivers that needed to be installed, which meant I had to find them online) but now it works like it’s brand new.  Now if only the battery could still hold a charge…

I vote we have mandatory 4-day work weeks instead of 5.  I feel so much more productive when I get an extra day off!

This weekend went by waaay to fast, but I feel like I say that about every weekend.  T’s parents are in town.  They flew in late Wednesday night, so I haven’t been getting much rest.

They arrived at our house around 11:15 Wednesday night because their flight got delayed.  We ended up hanging around with them until about 2 a.m. that night catching up and having some drinks.  Surprisingly the fact that I only slept 5.5 hours didn’t mess me up as bad as I thought it would.

On Thursday, my parents came up to visit with T’s family, and we had a cook out.  We chowed down on tons of food, enjoyed some drinks, and a lot of laughs.  My parents didn’t hit the road until almost 11 p.m., so it was another late-ish night for me.

Friday, we gathered with a bunch of our friends at a local bar and ended up staying there until about 2 a.m.  Originally I had hoped to not be out all night because we had tickets to the Steely Dan concert the next day.  Of course, once I have a few drinks, I’m always ready to party.  Once we got home, we decided to stay up and have ONE more drink.  That one turned into a few more, and all of a sudden it was daylight.  Yeah, T’s mom and I stayed up until practically 9 a.m.  We were just sitting around talking and having fun, but the time just flew by.

Needless to say, I was hurting when I finally crawled my ass out of (my super awesome and new) bed.  But, somehow I managed to get my shit together and still made it to the concert.  T’s poor mom did not – I felt a little bad for that one because the concert was great.  It was a perfect, warmish (not stifling hot) summer day with a nice breeze.  It did rain a little, but not too hard, and it kept us cool  – we just have bad luck with the Dan.  The last time they came down for the concert, it poured for most of the show.  I was happy that I knew all the songs and was able to bounce back from my super late night.

Yesterday we all lounged at the pool, then went out to dinner at an Italian restaurant – Alfredo’s –  that has been winning awards in Atlanta since the 1970s.  Since T’s family lives in NY, they have first-hand experience with all of the great Italian eateries that we in the South don’t always have.  We stuffed ourselves senseless with yummy food and wine.  I could barely eat my dinner after munching on garlic bread and appetizers.  I basically had a full portion left.  T’s parents really liked it; they even said it was better than the Italian restaurant they always eat at in Poughkeepsie.  I’ll take that as a good sign.

We all rolled ourselves back to the car and plopped down on the couch afterwards to watch True Blood (OMG – last night’s episode was so good!  I can’t believe there are only 3 left in the season.  Sadness.)  Tonight is their last night in town, so we’ll prob end up going out somewhere with them one more time.  We’ll more than likely hit up our neighborhood bar, Fox and Hound, since it’s half-priced food Monday, and it’s a tradition for us all to go there when they visit.

So, how was your weekend?  Did you do anything exciting?  Also, if you’re married/in a serious relationship, do you get along well with your in-laws?  Mine, are fucking awesome – if I do say so myself! 🙂

I’m feeling a little brain dead this week, and don’t have the time or energy to do my restaurant reviews, so they will have to wait till next week.  Instead, I am leaving you with this fun and exciting meme that I’ve seen going around on Facebook.  I’m not going to tag anyone specifically, but feel free to steal it.  Remember, sharing is caring – I’ll provide you with a post option when you have none! 🙂
